Between our Holiday Social,  unveiling historical plaques, our Fall Social, and our annual Open House held as part of the N.C. We are so pleased to announce the opening of the A. R. Ammons Poetry Contest for 2018. All students (K-12 and college also) who live in Columbus County or go to school in Columbus County may enter their original work. Poet Laureate of the United States is Coming to Columbus County
National Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry is coming to ColumbusTracey smith iconCounty, a cultural honor that has never been bestowed on the county before. Janice Young, president of the Reuben Brown House Preservation Society, which invited her and is sponsoring her visit, said Pulitzer Prize winning Tracy K. Smith, who was appointed Poet Laureate in September 2017, is scheduled to be in Columbus County March 6-7. Smith's visit will be a bonus to theTSmith ordinary light icon25th anniversary of Reuben Brown House’s A.R. Ammons Poetry Contest for students next year. Open to the public will be an "An Evening with Tracy Smith" at the SCC Auditorium, Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 7:00pm. Read and Print the flyer for the event.

New for this year is that we have graduated levels of membership. In addition to our basic memberships for Individuals and Couples, we have added three levels that make it easier for you to donate to our cause. The Schoolmaster Level at $50, the Heritage Level at $100 and the Preservationist Level at $250 will help us in our organizational efforts and are also tax deductible under the IRS Code 501(c)(3).

About the Reuben Brown Preservation Society
The Reuben Brown House Preservation Society, Inc. (RBHPS) is a non-profit organization with two main objectives: 1) to encourage and promote awareness, participation and appreciation of cultural, historic and fine arts in Columbus County and 2) to preserve the Reuben Brown House and other historic buildings for community use. The membership is open to any person or organization that supports the objectives of the group and who pays the annual dues. RBHPS began as the Whiteville Fine Arts Committee in the 1960’s, a well-respected, industrious group of women who passed on the mantle of supporting cultural efforts to the ever-widening membership of today. RBHPS sponsors a wide offering of programs and gatherings throughout the year which are free and open to the public It is the lead sponsor for the A.R. Ammons Poetry Contest since 2000 and for the county wide Historic Plaque Program. There is one General membership meeting annually.  Read the 2017 Annual Report.
