A. R. Ammons Poetry Competition

A.R. Ammons (1926-2001), Columbus County's famous poet, is the inspiration for the annual poetry contest for local K-12 and college students. Born in New Hope, NC, Ammons graduated from Whiteville High School, served on a destroyer escort in World War II and attended Wake Forest College and the University of California-Berkeley. He taught at Cornell University where he eventually served as Poet-in-Residence until 1996.
