Brown House Group to Speak to Council Tuesday

Members of the Reuben Brown House Preservation Society will speak to the Whiteville City Council Tuesday in hopes of saving the Whitley municipal building.

Janice Young of the Brown House group is scheduled to be on the agenda to address the council and offer the nonprofit’s help in "making a tough decision.

"We’re here to help any way we can,” Young said.

She added that Preservation North Carolina, a nonprofit dedicated to saving old buildings and architecture across the state, has expressed interest in helping save the structure.

The Whitley building began life as the Whiteville Post Office in 1938.

A pervasive mold problem closed the structure last year. City offices are now located in temporary quarters at the Hill Plaza shopping center, beside Rose’s.

The city council took a guided tour of the building earlier this year, and later instructed staff to seek qualified contractors to inspect and evaluate the Whitley building for renovation or demolition.

Five firms recently submitted request for qualifications (RFQ) letters to the city.

The firms will be evaluated by a committee including city staff and councilmembers Sara Thompson and Robert Leder, who will make a recommendation to the council. Interviews with the firms have not been completed.

Young said the Brown house Society is encouraging residents to attend the council meeting "to express your support for City hall.

"This is much more than just an old Post Office,” she said. "It’s an important part of our local history.”

Tuesday’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers.
